Visit the home of Mary Surratt
3610 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax
Visit the home of Mary Surratt, who was hanged for her involvement in the assassination of President Lincoln, and then visit Point Lookout at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay, the site of one of the largest and worst Union prison camps during the Civil War. The tour will begin with a visit to a Civil War site in the Franconia area.
Start the day at 8 a.m., August 7, 2010 with coffee, donuts and a tour of the Franconia Museum, located in the Franconia Governmental Center, 6121 Franconia Road. Board a comfortable rest-room equipped motor coach for the trip to a local historic site and then the Surratt House in Prince Georges County. After a buffet lunch at the Golden Corral in Waldorf, Maryland, you'll venture on to Point Lookout, which is now a Maryland state park as well as the site of the prison camp.
While at Point Lookout, you'll learn of the miserable conditions as well as the Fairfax County connection to one of the few successful escapes from the camp during the Civil War. You also will learn about one prisoner who was captured just nine days before the war ended; how he got to Point Lookout and how he was released
Leave from Franconia Museum at Franconia Governmental Center, 6121 Franconia Road. Free parking. Arrive at 8:00 a.m. for tour of museum, coffee and donuts. Bus leaves approximately 8:15 a.m. Estimated arrival time back at Franconia is between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.
COST: $100.00 Each. Includes Buffet lunch at Golden Corral and a fast-food value card per person on the way home as well as the entrance fee to each historic site and a contribution to the Franconia Museum.
